About Bones

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
Doberman Mix – Male – Adult Bones, a 7 year old lab/shepherd mix was given a chance for a new life in December 2007 thanks to a concerned neighbor who called King George Animal Control to report his dire condition. When KGAC arrived at Bones' home, they found this large, lovable guy chained to a tree with no shelter, no food or water, and weighing less than half his normal weight. They took him back to the KGAC shelter, but his prognosis was not good. He was so malnourished that his body was not functioning properly and they wondered if he'd even live to make a full recovery. Eventually his owners were prosecuted for neglect and KGAC seized their 5 other dogs. Shortly after the judge ruled in favor of Bones, a KGARL member received a call from KGAC letting her know that the pound was overflowing and asking for help to move Bones to safety. Bones had been there the longest, so his days were numbered. Shortly after his arrival at his foster home, Bones' personality really shined through. He enjoyed his new surroundings and the peace and quiet his new digs afforded him. He now gets two meals a day, all the water he wants. He also has other dogs and cats to play with. His foster parents soon discovered that the dog they thought would be mild mannered and quiet turned into a puppy of sorts. His energy abounds and he always greets his foster parents with a wag of his tail and almost a smile on his face. He has gained an amazing 37 pound in 5 months and now nearly 8 months after his nightmare came to an end, he is a normal 81 pounds. However, Bones’ story does not end there. After a trip to the vet, it was confirmed he had a large case of heartworms. Bones would now have to fight for his life at least a third time. Bones underwent heartworm treatment for about 4 months. Just recently, Bones went to the vet yet again for a heartworm test and it was negative!! The vet would like to do another heartworm test in a few months, but just to make sure the heartworms are still gone. KGARL is currently working on getting him neutered. Adoption process

Submitting an application does not guarantee a specific dog or cat.  We strive to match the personality and needs of our foster dogs and cats to a family who will best fulfill those needs.  If a family is not approved for a particular pet, it does not mean they will not be a good pet owner, it just means that their needs and the needs of the particular pet don’t match. We do not adopt on a “first come, first serve” basis.

Once your application is received, the application process begins.  We will review your application, check your references, check with your vet (if there are other animals in the household), speak to a landlord (if you rent), and arrange for a home visit.

Once your application is pre-approved (meaning, we don't see any red flags based on our preliminary review of your application), the applicant may be invited to meet their potential family member at a location convenient to the foster family (usually at the King George Petco).  Adoptions will NOT take place at the meet & greet, this is just a chance for us to get to know you and for you to spend time with our animals. After the meet and greet, we will ask that you spend some time thinking over your decision and we will do the same.

After the application review process is complete (meet & greet with animal, home visit, reference/vet checks, background check, etc.), if all is acceptable to both adopter and KGARL and we all agree to move forward, we will schedule a day/time to finalize the adoption. The adopter will be asked to sign the final paperwork and we will collect the adoption fee (cash, check, or paypal are all acceptable).  At this time, you can either pick up your pet, or schedule a time to do so. Adopters will be required to schedule an appointment with their veterinarian of choice within 15 days of taking your new pet home.

Please note that we do not do same day adoptions. If you are applying for a popular animal (such as puppies, small dogs, or special breeds), it can take several days for our volunteers to reach a decision that is best for the animal. We understand that it's difficult to wait, but please don't email us multiple times a day to check on the status of your application. We are a very small group and the same people that are reviewing your application are also replying to hundreds of emails and Facebook messages. We are all volunteers and have full time jobs outside of KGARL, so any time spent replying to emails/messages is time we are not reviewing your application.
